Fried Waffles

Now that the holidays are here, I am reminded of all the traditional baking I use to do with my grandmother.  Unfortunately, she passed away this past May at the age of 96 and I am no longer able to bake with her.  A few years prior my grandma was told she needed surgery and depending on how it went she may or may not be able to live on her own in her home.  I decided to bake with her something we use to make all the time together a few months prior to her surgery.  Little did I know that  This would be the LAST time I would ever bake with my grandmother in her house together. Her house we had been baking in my entire life.

I had been adding recipes to my blog as a hobby and that day wanted to take photos of my grandmother and I making one of our favorite together in her kitchen.  We had a laugh because we were so excited about making these that we accidentally added baking powder to the recipe when its not a part of it at all! They still turned out great and we had a memorable time making these together one last time.

My grandmother wound up having a stroke after her surgery and was told she was never able to return to her home she had build and lived in for over 60 year! As we cleaned out her home together all I wanted to keep were her cooking and baking items we use to use together.  This antique fried waffle kit was one of them.  I will make them and I will think of the times I made these with my grandmother laughing, singing, and then eating!
~*~Note~*~ you will need the Fried Waffle Kit to make these!

Ingredients:
IGNORE BAKING POWDER!
* Vegetable Oil for Frying
1 Cup of Sifted all Purpose Flour
* 1/2 Cup of Carnation Evaporated Milk
* 1/2 Cup of Water
* 1 tsp. of Sugar
* 1/2 tsp. of Salt
* 1 Egg
* Food Coloring optional
Procedure:
* Heat the Oil in a small/medium pot until you can drop water in it and it sizzles.
* Sift Flour in to a bowl
* Mix Milk, Water, Sugar, Salt, and beaten Egg together until smooth (you can put a few drops of coloring if you would like at this point.  My grandmother used to do red and green for Christmas.  We left them plain as well).

* Dip the iron into the hot Oil for about 15 seconds
*Dip the hot Iron into the batter even to the top.  No batter should go over the top of the iron!
* Dip the Iron back into the Hot Oil.
* As soon as the waffle is formed and begins to lightly brown, lift the iron (you may need a fork to help get it off) let it continue to cook in the hot oil flipping it over if you need to until lightly browned on both sides.
Transfer fried waffle onto a pan with paper toweling to drain the oil.
Continue with the rest of the batter, switching waffle iron shapes if you would like.
Transfer to a pretty plate and top with powdered Sugar.
* Since these are fried, they are best eaten the same day they are made.
